8 IUL Loans Strategies to Access Your Cash Safely

IUL Loans strategy represented by financial charts on a clipboard, cash, a golden key, and a calculator on a wooden desk.

IUL Loans are one of those features that people either get really excited about or really confused by. On paper, they sound simple: borrow against your cash value, keep your money compounding, and enjoy tax-free access. But the reality? I’ve seen some folks use them brilliantly… and others nearly sink their whole policy. The difference almost always comes down to how you approach it.

If you’re curious about how to make IUL Loans work for you instead of against you, here are eight strategies I walk clients through all the time.

1. Pick Loans Over Withdrawals (Most of the Time)

Withdrawals feel easy—just take the money out. But once it’s gone, it’s gone. Loans, on the other hand, let your cash keep compounding inside the policy while you borrow against it. It’s like using your house as collateral without having to sell it. I’ve seen people regret early withdrawals because they lost decades of potential growth.

2. Fixed vs. Variable Rates—Know the Trade-Off

Here’s where it gets tricky. Fixed-rate IUL Loans are predictable—you always know the interest. Variable rates can start lower, which looks nice on day one, but if interest rates climb, your costs climb with them. One client of mine went with variable, thinking he was saving money… until rates doubled. Lesson learned: think long-term, not short-term.

3. Wash Loans Are Worth Asking About

A “wash loan” sounds too good to be true, but it’s real. You pay loan interest, and the carrier credits the same amount back. Net result? Close to zero cost. It’s not free, but it’s pretty close. The catch? Not every policy offers it, and sometimes it only kicks in after year 10. Still, it’s one of the most overlooked features out there.

4. Don’t Borrow Too Early

This one’s big. Taking out large loans in the first few years is like yanking a plant out of the soil before it’s rooted. Your policy needs time to build cash value. I usually suggest waiting at least 10–12 years before leaning on IUL Loans for income. Borrow too soon, and you risk stunting the entire growth process.

5. Overloan Protection Is Your Seatbelt

I can’t say this enough: add the overloan protection rider. Without it, if your loan balance creeps too close to your cash value, the whole policy could implode. I once had someone call me in a panic after ignoring this—luckily, their carrier offered a late add-on. Most people don’t get that lucky. It’s cheap insurance against a huge headache.

6. Repayment Isn’t a Dirty Word

Yes, IULs are often pitched as “tax-free income you never have to pay back.” Technically true. But here’s the thing—if you’re younger, occasional repayments can keep the policy healthy. One client set up a small annual repayment, almost like a side savings plan. It wasn’t a lot, but it kept the loan balance from ballooning out of control. Sometimes “boring and consistent” wins.

7. Coordinate With the Rest of Your Income

An IUL should be part of your retirement toolbox, not the whole thing. Social Security, pensions, investments—they all matter. The smartest strategies use IUL Loans to fill gaps. For example, maybe you take loans in years when the stock market tanks, so you don’t have to sell investments at a loss. That’s how you get flexibility out of the policy instead of stress.

8. Review Every Year (Seriously)

Think of your IUL like a car you want to drive for decades. You wouldn’t ignore oil changes, right? Same idea here. Loan rates shift. Market returns shift. Your life changes too. A quick annual review with your agent can keep you from missing something that could spiral later. I promise—it’s way easier to adjust yearly than to fix a major problem 15 years in.

Why Strategy Matters

Used right, IUL Loans can feel like one of the smartest financial tools around. Used wrong, they’re a ticking time bomb. The good news is you don’t have to guess. With the right planning—and a little patience—you can unlock your cash safely and keep your policy strong for the long haul.
